Dance, one of the most graceful forms of art. A passion and means of sled expression to many. One such dancer was little Daria, with shimmer in her eyes and grace in her movements. “Mommy, I want to be a dancer” she would say with joy.
She loved to dance, but her dreams were crushed by her diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare tumor, in her right leg. The tumor needed to be removed so she can walk and dance.
It was very complicated to move ahead with surgery too as what a doctor sees in a printed image can’t exactly capture the complexity of the human body. Careful planning was required. The doctors had to remove the tumor and reconstruct Daria's femur, her own live fibula, and a donor's bone.
After exploring several other ideas, the doctors stumbled upon to 3D printing. After a quick CT scan, the 3D model was created. Seeing the model is a critical moment as it gives doctors a very accurate picture and often makes it obvious that the initial plans wouldn’t have succeeded.
The operation lasted ten hours with seven surgeons rubbing their heads. In the end, however, the surgery was a huge success. Daria had a long way into rehab, but had chances of an almost complete recovery!
